Often, one radical idea can spark incredible success, yet why do so many companies focus on sticking to the status quo? It can be incredibly limiting if you only stay the course of what has always been done. In this day and age, what you’ve been doing just will not make the cut anymore.
In order to foster the right environment for change, you have to actively work on a few things. TIME put forth a great article about taking your business to the next level. In it, they detailed five steps to leave the status quo behind. We wanted to take this moment to talk about their tips for change.
- Cultivate Creativity: How many times have I talked about the importance of innovation? Knowing how to adapt to the ever-changing times is the ultimate key to a successful business. Companies that do not innovate are in danger of lagging behind. Remember to foster creativity within your company with constant communication and fresh concepts.
- Optimize Collaboration: The topic of constant communication is vital to great collaboration. As a company, we focus on teamwork and building on each other’s ideas. It shouldn’t be just one person trying to do it all. It takes a group of people spit balling ideas, collaborating, and feeding off each other to create an environment for change.
- Take Some Risks: This is one of my favorite steps. Taking risks can seem incredibly scary, but it can actually really benefit the business. It is very true that one radical idea can inspire amazing change and help push the company through to future success. Leaving our comfort zones is always one of the first steps into growth. Remember the lessons we learned from Who Moved My Cheese? “If we don’t change, we could become extinct.” Sometimes you have to give up on the old ways in order to make room for the new. If your old process just isn’t working anymore, it is time to wake up and move on. The worst thing you could do is nothing.
- Accept Failure: Of course, not everything we do will elicit success; sometimes, it just doesn’t work out. But you cannot expect that or you will never want to take risks. Failure is just another learning experience—a way to grow. We mentioned how important this idea is in a past blog. You can’t be scared of trying new things; you can’t be afraid of failing. “When you move beyond your fear, you feel free.”
- Prioritize for Success: We only have so much time and when we accept that, we can focus on what is truly important for growth and success. The TIME article had a great quote on this subject. “Identify your most critical projects, the ones on whose results your success truly hinges. Now make those projects your priority. Scale back on the time that you allow non-priority issues to take from them.”
These steps should be an integral part in every company’s long-term and short-term plans. It is vital to remember these things if we want to foster growth and leave that status quo behind.
