Marketing is a process not a project.  We’ve discussed before how marketing’s best results are based upon 50% art, 50% science and 50% luck. Just because you had a great 2012 doesn’t ensure that the same will happen in 2013 if you continue down the same strategy as last year. So what are the trends you should be evaluating to maximize 2013 success potential?

Joanna Lord recently authored the story titled “10 Online marketing trends for 2013” at Entrepreneur.com where she offers the following trends:

  1. A surge in second screen value: read as “mobile is the new frontier”
  2. The evolution of “attribution modeling”: which is to say that without analytics you are flying blind so track how channels effect each other
  3. The rise of gamification: see last week’s blog here
  4. An increased focus on inbound marketing: finally the world is waking up to the power of social for B2B
  5. Improved data visualization:  better visualization makes for better interpretation and new tools are emerging to make this easier
  6. More loyalty marketing: given the noise barrier you have to break through and the amount of competitors vying for your prospects it is easier to maintain existing customers and upsell than it is to acquire new
  7. Brands as social influencers: social community sites have allowed brands to establish and maintain unparalleled followings
  8. More analytics: if you can’t measure and analyze your results then you will never know how to refine and improve or even if you are winning or losing
  9. Design is king:  there was a time when content was king, but the focus has shifted to great design to break out from the pack
  10. Local marketing goes mainstream: small business and specific geographic markets are now opening up thanks to new tools

So it goes without saying that I whole-heartedly support this list and strongly suggest you take another look at your 2013 marketing strategy before it s too late.
