Hi Magnetic Monkey readers! I was asked to guest write this blog about getting into marketing as young adult because, well, that’s what I’m currently doing. I never thought I would be so interested in this… but here I am.
Alright, so a little about myself: My name is Nikki Lee and I am finishing up my last year at the University of San Francisco. The funny thing is that I’m not even a marketing major… I’m an international studies major with a concentration in culture, societies, and values. I got into marketing because of a bet actually. In order to win, I had to complete (and pass) the Hubspot Inbound Marketing Certification program. At first, I was so not into the idea, but after a couple of classes, I was hooked. Seriously, you couldn’t pull me away from my laptop, I was so into it. I honestly never thought I would be so interested in a business related job. When I finished the final test and saw that my score was actually better than my marketing guru father’s, I was ecstatic.
Taking that course was the best thing I could have done for myself career wise. It opened a lot of doors for me and helped me to realize the importance of marketing. I was asked to talk to you guys about little ways young adults can get into marketing, so here it is:
1. TAKE THE HUBSPOT INBOUND MARKETING COURSE~ I don’t think I can stress this enough. It is so incredibly vital to do this. It teaches you all the important things about inbound marketing in a creative and interesting way… plus, it looks great on your resume. If you even have the slightest interest in marketing, this is a good program to take. Obviously, inbound marketing is only part of the equation, but it’s a huge part! This is particularly true to our technological generation.
2. Start a Blog~ It’s good to get into the practice of writing every week. It could be about anything… it is just important to get into the swing of writing in a professional manner on a consistent time frame. It can get kind of awkward sometimes– writing to an imaginary audience. I know it was really weird for me. I questioned whether or not my ramblings actually made a difference… was anyone even reading my blog posts? But once you get the hang of it, it becomes immensely easy and actually kind fun. To be honest, it makes you feel kind of important… having people read your posts that is. And when you eventually make your way to tip number 4, you’ll have a reference for your potential employer to read your writings.
3. Follow and Read Marketing Blogs/Twitter Accounts~ This is such a little thing you can do, but so important. It is very easy to follow a few extra Twitter feeds and check in on some blogs every once in a while. They will provide you with amazing and relevant content that will help you down the line. Start early! I also really like to watch Ted Talks on various business techniques. It is a great way to garner vital information.
4. Find an Internship with a Company’s Social Media Department~ This is another amazing opportunity to get into marketing. One thing you’ll learn (or hopefully already know) is that social media plays a huge and extraordinarily necessary role in the marketing game. If you are still in school, there is most likely a social media related job available to you. I know my school has one. The other option is to find an unpaid (or paid if you’re lucky) internship with a company near you. It is a great way to learn inbound marketing on the job and build up your network. This type of work can almost guarantee either a job offer or a reference after you finish school or gain more experience.
I hope you guys take this information to heart seeing as it is genuinely important. It’s even a good idea to share this with your friends and family who might be slightly interested in the field. No matter what field you end up in, marketing plays a role. So why not start ’em young?
