Hello again, marketers! We wanted to take this time to discuss the very sneaky, albeit brilliant, marketing tactics used by Burger King in their latest ad.
By now, you’ve probably all seen the 15 second spot that the fast food chain aired earlier last week… and you probably have some strong feelings about it. However, if you’ve somehow been living under a rock, let us clear it up for you. Burger King launched a 15 second video ad that triggered peoples’ Google Homes to respond to “What is the Whopper burger?” The Google Home device then responded with the first paragraph of the Wikipedia page for the burger in question. Of course, a lot of people freaked out. And Google– who had no prior knowledge of the ad– responded quickly to remove the interaction with the ad.
Love it or hate it, this ad was brilliant. Why? EVERYONE is talking about it… and isn’t that the point of marketing? To get people to talk about, search, and ultimately, buy your product? Now, we do have to wonder, is the old adage, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” true?
We’ll make this blog short and sweet. What do you all think about Burger King’s marketing strategy? Too sneaky for their own good or just brilliant enough? Let us know!
