Do you want to stand out at work? I’m sure you do! If you have even a bit of ambition to grow in your career, you’ll want to do what it takes to make that happen for yourself. So with that in mind, we’ve got the tips for you!
Frances Bridges, Forbes Contributor, writes a great article on the subject with four ways a person can positively stand out at work.
- “Pick Up Slack” If you start picking up slack at work, you are bound to stand out in a big way. If you wait around for your boss to give you work or if you put in the bare minimum, you are not likely to grow. The proactive and solution-oriented mind will actively pick up work to help the greater team. If you see that some of your teammates are drowning and you offer to help without being told or without complaint, you will quickly be noticed by the higher ups. Making yourself useful can go a long, long way.
- “Handle Criticism With Grace” No one is perfect and everyone is replaceable. Let’s just get that out of the way now. The way that you handle constructive feedback will make you a much better employee and can actually help you grow much faster. We are strong believers in the concept of failing forward. Use your failures as tools to learn and progress. If you meet every piece of criticism with resentment, anger, or excuses, your boss will stand out for the wrong reasons. By embracing feedback and moving forward, you will gain a reputation for being self-aware and solution-oriented– both of which are important soft skills in any field.
- “Prioritize” Time management and prioritization are hard skills to master. If you are trying to set yourself apart at work, the first thing you’ve got to figure out is what will make a bigger impact for you and for your team. Learning how to focus on the right projects and not waste time on the wrong ones will help propel you forward.
- “Join A Unique Group” Most likely your company has side projects or groups you can join. There is a fine balance between fitting in and standing out. If you hope to grow and succeed somewhere, you will want to partake in groups that make the company culture great. Are there tiger teams you can join? These teams are a great way for you to collaborate with others and help find solutions for real problems. If you can do that, you will most definitely distinguish yourself at work.
See? Not too difficult at all to stand out at work! Ultimately, it is about embracing every opportunity and raising your hand to help wherever possible. Doing so with integrity and with an entrepreneurial spirit will go a long way. So, let’s all go kick some ass at work!
