The business world is not easy. We know this. Failure is a huge part of the entrepreneurial landscape, especially if you want to succeed. Something important to remember is that everything worth having takes effort and sometimes, it can get ugly.
Let’s take this moment to discuss Entrepreneur.com’s “5 Ugly Truths about Entrepreneurship.” We think it will be a very empowering lesson for us all.
- “You are more likely to fail than succeed.” You might think that we’re assholes for talking about this, but it is a possibility– one we obviously do not want to become a reality. However, just because failure is probable, it doesn’t mean you should give up on your goals. Working hard to achieve your dreams is an important step on the road to success. Every failure will be a learning opportunity! Think about all of the great success stories out there (like Apple or Facebook)– almost every single one face immense hardships, but they pressed on and made something great.
- “You can lose everything.” When starting any sort of business endeavor, be aware of the huge financial burden that inevitably follows. Of course, we know all about inbound marketing and the strategies that save us money! But loans to help with growth will definitely be a thing for start-ups.
- “You will experience extreme stress.” Stress is a given. Being an entrepreneur is an incredibly taxing experience. There is no one else to solve the problems– it’s all up to you. Stress will not be going away anytime soon, so it’s important to learn how to work around that. There are lots of productive ways to de-stress, like working out or meditating.
- “You will lose touch with touch with some family and friends in the beginning.” Running a business is hard– no one ever said it was easy, right? It takes a lot of time, dedication, and energy. First and foremost, it takes sacrifice. With that comes the possibility of people fading away from your life because you just don’t have the time to give them the amount of attention they want. The people who matter most, however, will understand and respect your passions and goals. Eventually, you will be able to better manage your time for the company and for your friends.
- “You will have regrets at some point.” What’s that saying? You can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs? Yeah, we know it’s a little cliché, but it’s the truth. Occasionally, you will have to make hard choices and you won’t always make the ‘right’ one. And sometimes you will have to forgo drinks with friends to work late. That is OKAY. Mistakes happen! Just don’t let regret over take you. Use it as a learning experience. Once you make it where you want to be, all those ‘regrets’ will be worth it.
Of course, success never comes easy. It helps to know the kinds of sobering facts you might face on your path to entrepreneurial land. In the end, it’s usually worth the entire struggle when you get to see your dreams come to life.
